Shoulder Replacement Surgery in Seoul Anatomic or reverse
When arthritis or a massive rotator cuff tear has worn out your shoulder and other treatments no longer help, a total shoulder replacement can relieve pain and restore everyday function.
Gangnam Nanoori Hospital, at 731 Eonju-ro in Gangnam-gu near Hakdong Station (Line 7, Exit 10), offers anatomic and reverse total shoulder replacement for advanced arthritis and massive, irreparable rotator cuff tears. Surgeons first assess X-rays, CT or MRI and try non-surgical care where suitable, with rehab by dedicated therapists afterward. English-speaking coordinators can book via WhatsApp at +82-10-6290-9796.
Who may benefit from shoulder replacement
Replacement is usually considered when pain limits sleep and daily life despite medication, therapy and injections. For earlier-stage problems, see shoulder pain treatment.
Osteoarthritis
Worn cartilage leaves bone grinding on bone, causing deep aching, stiffness and night pain.
Rheumatoid arthritis
Inflammatory arthritis that has damaged the joint surfaces despite medical treatment.
Cuff tear arthropathy
A long-standing, massive rotator cuff tear has led to arthritis and weakness.
Irreparable cuff tear
The tendons are too damaged to repair, so you cannot raise your arm properly.
Complex fractures
Some severe fractures of the upper arm bone in older adults are better treated with replacement.
Failed earlier treatment
Previous surgery or months of good non-surgical care have not controlled pain.
Anatomic vs reverse shoulder replacement
The right design depends mainly on whether your rotator cuff still works. Your surgeon checks this with an exam and MRI or CT.
| Anatomic total shoulder | Reverse total shoulder | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Replaces the ball and socket in their natural positions | Swaps them: a ball goes on the socket side and a cup on the arm bone |
| Rotator cuff | Needs a working rotator cuff | Designed for a torn or non-functioning cuff; uses the deltoid muscle to lift the arm |
| Typical patient | Osteoarthritis with a healthy cuff | Cuff tear arthropathy, massive irreparable tears, some fractures and revisions |
| Goals | Pain relief and good range of motion | Pain relief and the ability to raise the arm again |
Both are major operations. Your surgeon will explain risks such as infection, instability, nerve injury and implant loosening.
What happens during shoulder replacement
You will meet your surgeon and an English-speaking coordinator before surgery to plan each step, including your stay and rehab.
Pre-operative assessment
X-rays and CT or MRI show bone shape and cuff condition. Blood tests and a health check confirm you are ready for surgery.
Anesthesia
General anesthesia, often combined with a nerve block to reduce pain after surgery.
Replacing the joint
Through an incision at the front of the shoulder, damaged surfaces are removed and fitted with metal and plastic implants.
Hospital stay
Most people stay in hospital for a few days while pain is controlled and early movement begins.
Discharge
You go home in a sling with a written exercise plan and follow-up appointments.
Recovery timeline
Rehab is gradual and essential for a good result. Our dedicated therapists guide you, and you can continue the program at home.
Weeks 0 to 6
Sling most of the time. Gentle guided movement, plus elbow, wrist and hand exercises. No lifting or pushing up from chairs.
Weeks 6 to 12
The sling is usually removed. Active motion improves and many light daily tasks return.
Months 3 to 6
Strengthening exercises. Many people return to activities such as driving, golf or swimming when cleared.
6 to 12 months
Continued gains in strength and comfort. Heavy lifting and high-impact activities are usually limited long term.
What shoulder replacement does
The worn joint surfaces are replaced with smooth implants so the shoulder can move with less pain.

Common Questions
Am I too young for shoulder replacement?
Shoulder replacement is most common in people over 60, but age alone does not decide it. Younger people with severe arthritis may be candidates when other treatments have failed. Your surgeon will discuss implant lifespan and activity limits with you.
How long does a shoulder replacement last?
Modern shoulder implants often last many years, and most people do not need another operation. Wear and loosening can occur over time, which is why heavy lifting and high-impact activities are usually discouraged.
How long will I stay in Seoul after surgery?
Plan for a hospital stay of a few days, plus time for early follow-up visits before flying. Your surgeon will advise when long-haul travel is reasonable. We provide a written report and rehab plan to take home.
Are there alternatives to shoulder replacement?
Yes. Physical therapy, medication, image-guided injections and, for some arthritis, bone marrow (BMAC) injection may relieve symptoms. Arthroscopy may help selected patients. Replacement is considered when these no longer control pain.
Will my insurance cover shoulder replacement?
Enrolled foreign residents can use Korean NHIS. For international insurance, we prepare medical reports and billing documents insurers usually request, but coverage and pre-approval depend on your policy. Contact your insurer early, before surgery.
How do I get a surgeon's opinion before traveling?
